Why I Made This Tracker

I originally created this tracker for our own homeschool as a simple way to plan our year, keep track of attendance, organize our subjects and curriculum, and preserve meaningful memories along the way. After using it for multiple years and making a handful of upgrades, I decided to share it with other homeschool families looking for a simple, reusable system that supports real-life learning.

Over time, I realized that different homeschool families have different record-keeping needs. Some families want to track instructional hours, while others simply need an easy way to document their homeschool days. That’s why I created both an Hours & Attendance Version and this Attendance Version. The two versions differ slightly in how attendance is tracked (see below), but both share the same flexible approach to planning, organizing subjects and curriculum, documenting learning, and preserving memories.

When creating this Google Sheet, I had four main goals:

  • Simple – I wanted a minimalist design that captures the essentials without unnecessary clutter.
  • Flexible – One wonderful advantage of homeschooling is the freedom to adjust plans for vacations, life events, or spontaneous adventures. The tracker automatically updates as you make changes, helping you stay organized without rigid planning.
  • Reusable – This Google Sheet is designed to be reused year after year. Simply update the year in one location, and all dates and calendars throughout the tracker automatically adjust.
  • Digital – Because it’s built in Google Sheets, you can access it from anywhere and easily duplicate it for multiple children or school years.

What’s Included

Year Tab – Annual homeschool calendar. Plan and adjust your school days as needed. The tracker automatically calculates your planned homeschool days throughout the year.

Plan your homeschool calendar year using the Year Tab in this homeschool tracker Google Sheet

Tracker Tab – Check off completed homeschool days throughout the year, organize subjects covered, and keep notes about curriculum, books, projects, field trips, activities, and other learning.

Track attendance (by checkboxes in monthly calendars), subjects covered (via customizable checkbox list), and curriculum / activity notes via free-text.

Summary Tab – View your yearly attendance totals and organize information about the curriculum you used, assessment and evaluation results, favorite books, and favorite activities from the year.

The Summary Tab in this Google Sheet includes sections for visualizing auto-calculated attendance totals and auto-populated subject lists, recording curriculum used, recording evaluation and assessment results, logging books read throughout the year, and noting favorite activities and memories.

Print Tab – Automatically pulls information from the rest of the tracker to create a clean, print-friendly homeschool record for your files.

This Google Sheet is designed to support flexible homeschool record keeping, especially for K–8, including attendance, subjects, and learning documentation. High school record keeping often shifts toward credits and transcripts, and some families may choose to supplement this tracker with additional tools during those years.

Which Version Is Right for You?

Both versions include the same core planning and homeschool record-keeping features. The main difference is how you record attendance:
